Talking

How does talking benefit students in the classroom?

Well first of all talking allows students to learn from eachother. Through conversations students pick up new information on a variety of topics. Another benefit would be that conversations can help a student practice thier language skills, they listen to others model public speaking. From this they are able to note it and hopefully apply it in their speaking. A third benefit would be that students learn how a conversation works, for example how to take turns listening and speaking. Also they learn how to show people they are listening by eyecontact, facial expressions, and body language. Talking also allows students to see different points of view or ideas about different topics in class. Another is that they are given the chance to use vocabulary they have learned, as well as learn new vocabulary from thier peers. There are many benefits that students get through talking in the classroom. The one that i like the most though is that they learn about new things and get to share ideas.

One of My Five Memories-Precious as Gold

So today in class we shared our five memories. I sat there and wondered how people had the courage to go up there and share thier "cry" and "precious as gold" memories. You see I had thought of it last night and I really didnt want to mess with the most important memory to me, I didnt want to cry in front of the class. So i only had four objects. ...I sat there in the tense still room, looking over to Jade every once in a while, not knowing how to contain myself anymore. But now I have the chance to share what i didnt share in class.

So the 16 th of october 2003, my brother passed away. At the time he was only 11 years old, i was devasted. He was way too young, he had just started middle school and had had several girlfriends already. He was my partner in crime, he was my posse! We always came up with the most spectacuar things to do, I would even dress him up with he was young enough to let me! One time we were playing while i had to do chores. So i was vaccuming and he was on the couch sticking his hand in front of the roaring heavy machine... But then it happened, I ran over his hand! I immediately regreted it, but it was too late! -We would always play with the cusions from the couch, but one time I dont know how my head ended up under a cushion under his butt! Yea my head was going to pop! But it was funny at the same time, so it took a while to get him off becuase i was laughing. The last memory i do have that is very important to me was the night before the incedent. During the time the house was getting remodeled so me, my brother, and my sister would sleep in the living room. That night my sister had already fallen asleep and it was just me and him talking. So I got around to asking about his girlfriend, and he told me a little about her. I asked him if they had kissed and he didnt want to tell me. So I asked if they would hold hands, and he said yes. So i asked him how and grabbed his hand. First i held it regular and he said it wasnt like that, then we interlocked hands and he laughed saying it was like that. Then we stayed holding hands, told eachother good night and that we loved eachother. The next morning he woke me up for school and told me not to forget a show to watch that night, and those were the last things we talked about.
There are just so many things that we did together, so many things around me that remind me of him. It really sucks to loose someone so close, its hard to keep going without someone that means so much to you. Now every night before i fall asleep i think of him. I fall asleep wondering how it would be if he was still here, how my day would of been different that day. And in the morning I wake up to a picture of him at my dresser that i always look at and smile.

But one thing i have learned is that we must appreciate who we have now. And now i think that this has made me stronger and i know im a little less fearless.

RAFT- The River that Missed the Girl

R-river
A-a girl
F-poem
T- distance

Why aren't you here today,
you've been away for too long.
I miss you, and wonder have i done something wrong?
You seemed to enjoy the time we spent together.
But now I sigh, you aren't around.

A tear streamed down because summer is practically gone.
I am a lonely creek, flooded with sadness.
My heart sinking to the dark murky depths.
The leaves will fall on me, the winter air will sweep over me.
The seasons will trickle by, as I wait.

But I am afraid,
Please do not forget me and return?
I don't want your face to fade, like a fish that escapes.
I'll be here another summer, looking for a you.
Patiently, I will wait many summers.

But if you decide never to come,
my waters will no longer be blue.
And if another comes to take your place
I hope she looks like you, that she swims like you,
and sits by me... like you.

But I know there is no one quiet like you,
sadness washes over me.
I know I am so very alone.
I wish you well
for I know you are forever gone.

I lie to myself,
Denial keeps me flowing, but deep inside
I know I will never enjoy your splashy laughter.
I still don't know what scared you away
I have always been sweet and tender to you.

And if you ever do come back,
I'll be here for you, to comfort you,
to let you be free.
But please do forgive me if my waters have turned
green, stagnant in you absence.
I'm sure life will come back to me upon your arrival.

Explain Writing

Writing is a process! Writing is a Process! Writing is a PROCESS!

Writing is a process because it consists of five separate stages. The stages are as follows:
1. Pre-writing-brainstorm, semantic maps, graphic organizer
2. Drafting- rough draft, outline
3. Revising-additions, deletions, sentence structure, adj., elaboration
4. Editing-check for sp. cap., punc.
5. Publishing- put it out there

In order to produce good quality writing a person must follow these stages in this order. Pre-writing allows to get your thoughts together, gather ideas, and take down opinions. Drafting is where you order the thoughts and write them out. Sometimes drafting can be repeated several times. Revising is when you go back through and add new sentences or take out what doesn't sound good. Elaboration can be added as well as adjectives to make your story juicy. In editing you check your spelling and punctuation, often times you might go back and forth between revising and editing. For revising and editing you can even have someone help you. Last is the publishing stage, here the final product is put together and presented.

In today's class we were able to start the process of writing a narrative, so far I have to revise some more and edit. Although its kind of korny you'll see it here!

Strategies

What are some examples of pre/during/post strategies? How do they help students?

Wow! if i would have known this was going to be a question for our blogs I would have taken notes on the strateiges the other day in class. :(

One thing that I do know is that any of the strategies that i will talk about can be applied to pre, during, and post.

For example: Questioning is a big one. you can ask the students questions before to get them thinking about the topic. questions can be asked during so they have a chance to predict or practive inferencing or so that they can make connections. Questions can be done post for assessment of comprehension.
Brainstorming can also be done before, during, and after a lesson.
A really good one is visualizing because it makes the students create a picture in thier head and can be used before, during, and after.
There are many more strategies that can be applied to all three, and another important thing is that strategies can be used in combination. For example in questioning in it other strategies are found like; inferencing, activating background knowledge, connecting, predicting, and summarizing.(All of which can also be done on their own.)

The second questions is how do all these strategies help students? All the general strategies that we find in language arts can be applied to every other aspect in learning. These strategies can even be used outside of the classroom, which is why it is very important to practice these strategies with your children. Although they are learning them for the purpose of language arts we can help them realize that these are problem solving strategies that can help them in any subject in school and with any problem outside of school.
